Math 7 Surface Area & Volume Zoo

Students in Math 7 have worked hard the past few days on creating a Surface Area and Volume Zoo. Students worked in groups (individually by choice) to create animals out of boxes. Students then had to calculate the Surface Area and Volume of each body part. The assignment was designed to practice the Nebraska College and Career Readiness Math Standard: MA 7.3.3.b Solve real-world problems involving surface area and volume of composite shapes made from rectangular and triangular prisms.

On March 16th, nine junior high students participated in the regional round of the International National Academics Competition in Grand Island. They competed in History, Geography, and Science throughout the day, showcasing impressive skills against peers from Nebraska and Colorado. The competition consisted of three rounds, with points accumulating for the finals. Only the top three students in each category earned medals, requiring quick and accurate responses to questions. Making it to the finals secured qualification for the National Competition. Notably, exceptional performance in earlier rounds or medaling in the finals also earned qualification for International Competitions held worldwide (Science in Puerto Rico, History in London, and Geography in Austria).
Here are the notable achievements:
6th Grade:
Zoey Allen reached the finals in Geography and Science.
Kennedy Fichtner secured a spot in the Science finals after winning a tie-breaker.
Xander Galarneau claimed 1st in Science, 2nd in History, and 3rd in Geography.
Chase Whitehead earned 2nd in Science, 3rd in History, and competed in the Geography finals.
7th Grade:
Jaxyn Evans achieved 1st in Science and competed in the finals of History and Geography.
Brighton Hancock competed in the Science and History finals (tied for 3rd in History but lost the tie-breaker).
Amelia Rhine secured 3rd place in Science.
